RELAY FOR LIFE - AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY

Relay For Life

June 1st, 2007
Duane Carlson Stadium

We Need TEAMS!! Sign up today and make a difference!

Relay For Life® is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in our community. At the event, we celebrate survivorship and raise money to help the American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

But, Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It is a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. It is a night for people who have shared the same experience to comfort and console one another. During this event, we honor survivors during the Survivors Lap and we remember those we lost to cancer during the Luminaria Ceremony. We also celebrate life, friendship, and a chance to work together toward a cancer-free future.

Most importantly, Relay gives you the power to help in the fight against cancer. By joining together as volunteers and donors, our efforts help the American Cancer Society strive toward a future where cancer doesn’t take the lives of our friends and family.

Sign up today to become a part of the Relay phenomenon. Together we will fuel the work – and the hope – that can help make a cancer-free future a reality.

Brenda Pearce is a friend of mine, you can help her and the American Cancer Society by donating to the following link. Brenda is participating in the relay this year in memory of her mother.

ATHEIST HERO WHO DESERVED BETTER

PAT TILLMAN - ATHEIST ATHLETE, WARRIOR

PAT TILLMAN - ATHEIST ATHLETE, WARRIOR

PAT TILLMAN
From: WIKIPEDIA
From: True hero athlete Day's theme: Challenge yourself

Patrick Daniel Tillman (November 6, 1976 – April 22, 2004) was an American football player who left his professional sports career and enlisted in the United States Army in May 2002[1]. He served in Iraq and later in Afghanistan, where he was killed. Reports in the media of his death and the background of his sacrifice symbolized a heroic image in the minds of many Americans.

Subsequently, Tillman's death became a national controversy after the Pentagon disclosed to the Tillman family over a month after his death, on May 28, 2004, that he died as a result of a friendly fire incident. The family and other critics allege that the Pentagon delayed the disclosure for weeks after Tillman's memorial service out of a desire to protect the image of the U.S. armed forces.

From: CelebAtheists
Tillman's youngest brother, Rich, wore a rumpled white T-shirt, no jacket, no tie, no collar, and immediately swore into the microphone. He hadn't written anything, he said, and with the starkest honesty, he asked mourners to hold their spiritual bromides.

"Pat isn't with God, he said. "He's f -- ing dead. He wasn't religious. So thank you for your thoughts, but he's f -- ing dead.

Pat Tillman died for nothing because he was an atheist and believed in nothing says Commander.

This is unfucking-forgivable. The despicable discrimination against the nonreligious that has stained our democracy at all levels of government and the military must be exposed and eliminated. The founders of this country would be very disappointed in the state of our nation. I just watch this video clip where Pats mom describes how commanding officer Kauzlarich told here that they would never be satisfied because they are not Christians and they just wanted to be a pain in the ass. Also read the comments by this same commander made on ESPN. These types of prejudicial statements are unacceptable and should be thoroughly scrutinized.

I also would like to encourage you all to watch this moving testimony by Kevin Tillman.

Kevin Tillman testifies about Pat Tillman's death: "Fraud–deliberate and calculated lies."

Kevin Tillman testified in front of Waxman's hearing today. This is a sad testimony that reaches into your heart and rips it out, The propaganda and lies to cover up his death is unconscionable. Kevin was moved to tears as he told us how his brother was used to shift the focus off of Abu Ghraib…Will the right wing blame low level soldiers for this horrific chapter in this ugly war? He recounted other stories of soldiers that have been killed and the truth was substituted for propaganda…CNN has more

"We believe this narrative was intended to deceive the family but more importantly the American public," Kevin Tillman told a House Government Reform and Oversight Committee hearing. "Pat's death was clearly the result of fratricide," he said, contending that the military's misstatements amounted to "fraud."—"Revealing that Pat's death was a fratricide would have been yet another political disaster in a month of political disasters … so the truth needed to be suppressed,"…read on

Can we believe anything that this administration says, ever? The Pat Tillman case reaches to the top ranks of the military and as Pat's mother says:

Pat Tillman's mother, Mary Tillman, said she believed former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld must have known. "The fact that he would have died by friendly fire and no one told Rumsfeld is ludicrous,"

His commander said"Pat Tillman died for nothing because he was an Atheist and believed in nothing"

This is horrific. You sad, sick people that masquerade as human beings in the name of America. Watch this clip and then tell me how you feel about Pat Tilllman and the way the military treated him. And don't forget to dash in a perverted sense of Christianity to top it off.

ESPN:

Kauzlarich, now a battalion commanding officer at Fort Riley in Kansas, further suggested the Tillman family's unhappiness with the findings of past investigations might be because of the absence of a Christian faith in their lives.

In an interview with ESPN.com, Kauzlarich said: "When you die, I mean, there is supposedly a better life, right? Well, if you are an atheist and you don't believe in anything, if you die, what is there to go to? Nothing. You are worm dirt. So for their son to die for nothing, and now he is no more — that is pretty hard to get your head around that. So I don't know how an atheist thinks. I can only imagine that that would be pretty tough."

Asked by ESPN.com whether the Tillmans' religious beliefs are a factor in the ongoing investigation, Kauzlarich said, "I think so. There is not a whole lot of trust in the system or faith in the system [by the Tillmans]. So that is my personal opinion, knowing what I know."

HELP FIGHT MALARIA FOR LESS THAN 10$

By: Ashley Judd

NEW YORK -- In the time it takes you to read this article, four African children will die from malaria. Before the day is over, it will claim the lives of 3,000 children. This is the terrible reality of malaria. Though eradicated in the United States in 1951, it continues to plague the poorest places around the world, particularly sub- Saharan Africa. This April 25th marks the first ever Malaria Awareness Day in the United States. But we need more than awareness. We need action.

My interest in malaria prevention began when I traveled to Africa in 2005 and visited Population Services International programs in Kenya. In a country where approximately 90 children die daily of malaria, PSI is working to establish a "net culture," using extensive marketing and education to encourage the population to sleep under an insecticide-treated net every night. (Watch Judd describe how anyone can help fight malaria )

I had the opportunity to lead a malaria prevention demonstration myself at a neonatal clinic in Kenya. Despite the constant threat of deadly mosquito bites, the audience of pregnant women and recent mothers didn't have access to nets. Yet, they were curious and attentive as we demonstrated how bed nets can protect them and their children from the disease. Talking with a few mothers afterwards, I was convinced they would use the nets themselves and ensure their families did too.

In a recent Gallup poll, only 30 percent of Americans identified malaria as a "very serious" problem, yet the numbers on the ground tell a different story. Forty percent of the world's population is at risk of contracting malaria. There are between 350 and 500 million diagnosed cases each year, resulting in more than 1 million deaths annually. It remains the number one killer of children under the age of five in Africa. For too many people, death by mosquito bite is a daily menace. The most shameful part of this story is that malaria is preventable and treatable. We could end this devastation today.

Malaria is a disease of the blood transmitted from person to person by mosquito bite. It causes severe, flu-like symptoms including fever and vomiting. Left untreated, it can lead to coma, brain damage, life-threatening anemia and death. While scientists are hard at work trying to create a vaccine for malaria, this could take years. Fortunately, we don't have to wait-the tools to control malaria are already in our hands. The breed of mosquito most responsible for spreading the disease in Africa -- the female anopheles -- feeds at night, so a simple bed net treated with insecticide is often all it takes to protect a mother and child. If a child is bitten and contracts malaria, however, hope is not lost. Speedy diagnosis and inexpensive medicines, using a Chinese herb called Artemisia, can cure them before it becomes life-threatening. It costs only a dollar or two per dose. Similarly, pregnant women who take a drug called sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine can protect their unborn children from anemia, low birth weight, and death.

But there's a big difference between knowing how to control malaria and actually doing it. Too many people lack access to bed nets and treatments. That's where we all come in. It costs only $10 to buy a bed net, deliver it, and educate a family on proper use. With programs in Africa and throughout the developing world, PSI is fighting malaria through our new global initiative, Five & Alive, which targets children under the age of 5 to prevent and treat malaria, provide safe drinking water, treat malnutrition and pneumonia. Across America, people from all walks of life are coming together to fight this disease through a network called Malaria No More: Boys & Girls Clubs have begun raising money for bed nets; millions of grade school children are learning about the disease thanks to a new first-grade book and fifth-grade curriculum; and students on more than 50 college campuses -- including Emory, UCLA, and Harvard -- are raising awareness and funds through an innovative effort called Music to End Malaria. Together, we can ensure that mothers in Africa no longer have to worry whether their children will reach the age of five. Together, we can give the gift of growing up.

GLOBAL DAYS FOR DARFUR

Events from April 23rd-30th

Time is running out for the people of Darfur. Four years of genocidal violence has left over 400,000 dead, 2.5 million innocent civilians displaced, and 4 million men, women, and children completely reliant on international aid for survival. Not since the Rwandan genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of displacement, starvation, rape, and mass slaughter.

To call attention to the escalating violence and the continued failure of the international community to adequately respond to this crisis, activists across the world have come together to plan "Global Days for Darfur". This week of rallies, marches and vigils will run from April 23rd to April 30th and will highlight that "time is running out" for the people of Darfur.

Please support your fellow activists in speaking out for the people of Darfur by joining an event in your area. If there are currently no activities planned in your community, we hope you will consider starting your own event during this important week.

ATHEIST BLOOD DRIVE

Atheists to Counter ‘National Day of Prayer'
with Blood Donations
Lifesaving Action, Not Passive Prayer, Is the Message
---------------

http://www.atheistvolunteers.org/

NEW YORK, Mar 1. —What do you do on May 3, 2007, the “National Day of Prayer,” if you are an atheist, do not believe in prayer and are opposed to the observance of a prayer day being imposed on all American citizens?

While Believers are praying on May 3rd (an act that has been scientifically proven to be ineffective*), groups of atheists will go to Blood Banks in scores of U.S. locales to donate their blood and sign up for organ donation programs. It is a nationwide action which we hope will point out that there are alternatives to silently beseeching a deity to perform miracles.

"While religious people are on their knees, we atheists will be on our feet, giving a part of ourselves for the benefit of humanity," says Kenneth Bronstein, founder of the Center For Atheism, an informational and activist group based in New York City. "We know that prayer does not work--but medical science does."

This year, CFA will be joined by atheists from The Rational Response Squad, an activist network (RationalResponders.com) formed in 2005 by Philadelphia-based Brian Sapient and Rook Hawkins. The Rational Response Squad has grown from a popular internet radio show into a force of 20,000 members in 15 regional chapters and a youth division.

"We want to make a public statement about how nonreligious people can observe the so-called National Day of Prayer, which we have renamed Gift of Life Day," says Sapient. "At the same time, we want to let America know that there are millions of us who know that praying is nothing more than talking to yourself. So on that day, we atheists will be engaging in action that we can prove scientifically has real-life impact on our fellow citizens."

In the past three years, Gift of Life Day has become a tradition among New York City atheists. Last year, members of NYCA celebrated Gift of Life Day by giving blood at the New York Blood Bank in upper Manhattan. A group of atheists arrived together to donate their life-giving blood and then celebrated together in a small anteroom with coffee, juice and light refreshment supplied by the Blood Bank. “We found that the Blood Bank was delighted to have us, cooperated with us in every way and allowed us to post our atheist banner for the occasion,” notes Bronstein.

The Rational Response Squad will focus on logging the effort on one of their new websites (atheistvolunteers.org) to help make the project an International success.

If you want to start a Gift of Life Day in your locale, it’s simple. Here’s what you do:

1) Find your local blood bank by accessing www.americasblood.org or

http://www.givelife.org, then type in your zip code to find your local

blood bank.

.
2) Phone the blood bank to make arrangements for a group donation

(You will find them amazingly supportive and accommodating.)

3) Notify your local newspaper, TV and other media that your group is
doing this and why. It’s important to alert them long before the event.

4) Visit www.atheistvolunteers.org to log your donation.

It's simple, it's positive, it's effective. Come on, Agnostics, Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists, Secularists, Nonbelievers, Separation of Church and State advocates, join us in our humanitarian protest against the Day of Prayer! Show the world that while religious people are on their knees, Atheists are on their feet giving of themselves to humanity.
